NASCAR

NASCAR racing in Australia was made possible by the vision and determination of motoracing legend Bob Jane. Starting in the early eighties Bob had 2 years of planning, 4 years of construction, 14 million meters of earth moved and an investment of $54 million, creating Australia's only 1.8 km, 24 degree banked Superspeedway which opened on August 3rd 1987 by the Mayor of Keilor. The magnificent Goodyear Thunderdome at Calder Park.

The first oval meeting was held on February 28th, 1988 and with a mix of drivers from America's Winston West Series, and local Australian touring car stars and speedway drivers, the first meeting had a reported crowd attendance of over 46,000 spectators which proved a success story immediately.

NASCAR

The Australian NASCAR scene grew quickly due to its popularity and large prizemoney on offer for race teams. AUSCAR Australias own Falcon against Commodore in style of NASCAR's became very popular at the Thunderdome and put on some very close and exciting races with large car counts.

Indy Car Racing came to Australia for the first time in March 1991 at Surfers Paradise on a very fast street circuit with NASCAR as support races, this gave Nascar teams another track in the series as well as the smaller oval at Adelaide. During the mid 90s NASCAR and AUSCAR racing at the Thunderdome still had a large following.

Moving into the late 90s NASCAR/AUSCAR went to circuit racing around Australia. With no Thunderdome races on the calendar car counts dropped and few race meetings became available. Today, there is still a glimmer of hope for NASCAR racing in Australia with talk of a new series in the pipeline hopefully NASCAR will be back in action soon.
